HOT OFF THE PRESS: The History of English Literature (vol. 5)

The fifth volume (eds. Tamás Bényi, Angelika Reichmann, Nóra Séllei) covers English literature from the 1830s to the 1930s, the Victorian era and modernism, shedding new light on a number of phenomena (such as the realist novel, decadence, and the institutional background and cultural context of modernism) that are somewhat outdated in Hungarian discourse. The chapters in the volume also introduce lesser-known periods and phenomena, including the literature of the turn of the century and the First World War, the emergence of female authorship, the literary condensation of "Englishness"  and the role of the imperial context. In addition to canonical authors and works, the development and genres of popular literature are discussed, as well as well-known works such as Dracula and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
